About
Detroit artist John Azoni is an abstract painter making bright, colorful and playful paintings often grounded in landscapes.
A graduate of the College for Creative Studies in 2007 with a Bachelors in Fine Arts, Azoni has exhibited his work in various galleries in the Metro Detroit area, as well as nationally and internationally.
Born with a creative bent, he began excelling in music at a very young age. Getting his start on the piano at age 6, he eventually picked up guitar, began writing, recording, and performing his own music, and later learned several other musical instruments.
During high school, Azoni was fortunate to travel with his family to Italy. It was there that he became inspired to expand beyond music into visual arts. Sparked by the culture and history that existed in Europe, and the street artists he witnessed, he became obsessive about learning to mix colors and paint what he saw. The remainder of his years before college would be spent painting portraits and still lifes inspired by painters such as Degas, Cezanne, Van Gogh, and Picasso.
Azoni went on to study painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland, before moving back to Detroit to finish his degree at the College for Creative Studies. While still in his undergraduate studies, he had the opportunity to spend several months in Aix en Provence in the South of France – the same town that Cezanne himself spent most of his life - where he created art alongside 11 other artists from the States.
Now as a mid-career artist Azoni focuses his efforts less on the gallery scene and more on partnering with interior designers and art consultants where his paintings help create unique and welcoming spaces.
When not painting, Azoni is the founder of a video production company called UNVEILD helping colleges and universities automate their video storytelling content through a subscription approach.
